Not focused on bin Laden
Remember once upon a time, George W. Bush promised to bring Osama bin Laden to justice “dead or alive?
I know, it was a long time ago. As far back as September 2001. And
it’s not like Bush continued to have that zeal for justice for the
victims of 9/11. Just a few months after Bush made that pledge he said this in regards to a question about bin Laden:
So I don’t know where he is. You know, I just don’t spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you.
Bringing justice to the families of those who died on September 11,
2001 by capturing bin Laden has fallen so far down the line of
priorities that the Central Intelligence Agency closed Alec Station
late last year. The closure of this unit was confirmed on Monday.
Alec Station operated for nearly a decade to hunt down Osama bin
Laden and his top lieutenants. This is the unit responsible for the
information the CIA presented to Bush about bin Laden’s abilities and
desire to strike American targets here and abroad.
The closing of Alec Station not only represents the lowered view of
the importance of bin Laden, not just to bring him to justice but as
leader of al Qaeda, but also demonstrates how thinly stretched
intelligence agencies resources have become in recent years.
