FOAD Thursday: Canadian Immigration

This Fuck Off and Die Thursday is about Canadian Immigration. An agency that is even harder to please then the Canadian Revenue Agency. I have a Temporary Resident Visa so there is a high risk that I have to leave Canada in July. But I would really love to stay in this country and move to British Columbia, enjoying the freedoms that are enjoyed by so many Canadians. Of course, if I had a 4-year degree, it would make things a lot simpler. But there is still hope so I haven’t ordered by plane tickets to London or Dublin just yet. I know for a fact that I can do this and if I can’t, at least I would have made the most of the time that I bought.

But Canadian Immigration is SO hard to deal with on so many levels. Even if I find the woman of my dreams and marry her, that is still not enough for them. My dream girl would have to support me financially and the girl I want would probably be around my age and not make enough to do so. She has to have a pretty large cash flow and generally, the perfect girl would be around MY age. Girls MY age are in college or university. Or they have jobs at places like London Drugs or in positions like Administrative Assistant. And I am not sure how I could get PR on Humanitarian and Compassionate Grounds.

Provincial Nomination is so hard to do as well. Here in Alberta, I have to have a JOB first. That means I have to find an employer willing to employ me. This means that I have to get a work permit and that means I have to get a Labour Market Opinion. And it takes 1-4 months to get a Labour Market Opinion from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and 2 months for the work permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. And what employer would wait 3-6 months for a work permit? Even with the labour shortage here in Alberta, no one is willing to wait. I know, I’ve contacted every web design firm in this city. It’s harder in other provinces. In British Columbia, you have to be a BC college grad, a job in BC with a college degree or you have to have $2mil for PNP. Other provinces have much harder controls and it gets harder no matter what province and territory you go to.

Quebec Nomination is also very hard to do. I don’t qualify for a Certificat de sélection du Québec yet but I have written a letter to the Minister for Ministre de l’Immigration et Communautés culturelles of Quebec. I don’t speak French and I don’t have a lot of money. Nor do I have a college/university degree. So this became a real big problem.

I agree. CIC are dumb motherfuckers. The system they’ve established really doesn’t benefit the community, but the economy, why of course. I always prided the Canadians on being “decent, honest, friendly” people, which is true. The Government that represents them is far from it. Calgary is in the middle of an oil-boom and severe labour shortages yet the only thing they have done is to publish an “occupations under pressure” list which sort-of speeds up anyone applying for a Temporary Work Permit. Also, low skill-level workers permits are now valid for 2 years (still have to the country for 4 months afterwards though, which totally fucks you up if you wish to get residency) and can be applied for online (wow).

I am mid 20’s, I am English (which counts for nothing at all, even with the Queen’s face all over their dollars and the commonwealth history), I have a 3-year Honours degree in Economics and I have already spent a year in the country on the BUNAC scheme paying taxes for which I cannot claim back (CPP and EI) and received no eligibility for anything during my stay….. yet I still cannot obtain a work permit in Canada other than for cleaning toilets or serving coffee in the fast fod industry. No wonder Canada is going through the problems it is with immigration and complaints are rife about foreign-speaking immigrants flooding their low-skilled jobs market.

SORT IT OUT. I cannot stay with my girlfriend unless we get married, and even THEN it’s no guarantee. Oh Canada!
