My rants and concerns about the iPhone

Okay, if you have travelled around the blogosphere yesterday, you could have seen a number of posts about the iPhone that is about to come out from Apple. Various rants include the iPhone has no keypad, it has a touchscreen, . And others express their unwavering desire to own one. And those at the Keynote dwell on the fact that the iPhone stole the show. I sympathize with the developers of the ModBook though, after all, we just recieved the ultimate cellphone. And if the developers of the ModBook can’t honestly say that they would wait hours in line to make sure they had the first one in their area, we know they are lying. We have Blackberry addicts joining the fray and Apple’s stock climbing.

Let’s face the facts. Apple is changing the game and we all just hit the jackpot. Or so you’d think. You see, we ALL haven’t won nor will we all win equally. You see, the iPhone is coming out, in the United States, in June 2007. And for those of us wanting to flee the states, have already fled the states or are currently in limbo based on visa options - we have to wait until Q4 2007 for an European iPhone and until 2008 for an iPhone in Asia. And where does Canada lie in all this? Certainly, Canada is NOT the United States but then again, is Canada European or (dare I say it) Asian? Or is there no ETA for the iPhone in Canada? It would make sense after all, most carriers here in Canada (Telus, Rogers, Fido, Bell, etc) are proprietary and do not respect the customer where they can purchase their phone and switch carriers freely.

I hope that we can all learn to get along without the iPhone if we do not live in the states, and if we do live in the states - be prepared for a fight. There are only 10,000,000 iPhones going to be produced in the US meaning that if there is a VERY high demand (and there will be) you should expect to wait a while. However, I have expressed a few concerns of mine when the iPhone finally gets to be in my own hands.

  • The Touchpad - Okay, this is fucking cool but many people worry about it getting all gunked up by your fingers/what not. This is not a bad thing seeing as if we have had pizza and this had more than just the home button, we’d be in deep shit. More often then not, you can use a bottle eyeglasses cleaning fluid and an eyeglasses cleaning cloth to clean it up. Problem solved and you can keep your iPhone looking as smexy as it was when you originally got it. Good thing too, considering that the iPhone is supposed to look as smexy as your iPod and your MacBook Pro. Plus, this gives us unlimited amounts of button combinations and possibilities. And hell, at least it’s not a stylus.
  • OS X - What IS OS X in Apple’s eyes? Technically, OS X is anything Apple wants it to be but I seriously doubt that you can run Transmit or Vienna on your iPhone as they are now. This means that there is probably going to be some new API that will be unveiled at WWDC 2007 allowing us to make our applications compliant with the new iPhones. So, for those of us with ADC memberships, we should be seeing more of what Apple has in store for us to work with. Hell, there might be a version of Interface Builder that incorporates these new features.
  • Improved Voicemail - Okay, I absolutely LOVE this idea and I believe it is worth it for the iPhone. To hear only the messages in your Voicemail that you want to… Simply superb!

There is much more that I could comment on but I am going to leave those thoughts in your head for now. Fu fu fu fu fu.

I do love the look of the iPhone; however this said I don’t need an MP3 player, I’ve already got one. How long will the battery last when it’s driving that big touchscreen - I need 4 hours talktime a day.

What I found most amusing is that Apple don’t even own the trademark for iPhone and are being sued about it!

The only reason Cisco is in a tizzy about it is because they didn’t come up with the idea first and they want to make some mone of the iPhone no matter how dishonest or underhanded it is.
