Kyle Korleski on the new MySpace Instant Messenger

First off, I noticed that numerous clients are running on the net and contain spyware (such as Gator’s GAIN). The official URL of MySpace is http://www.myspace.com/myspaceim - okay?

And sadly, this package has no support for the Macintosh OS X. Most other IM clients (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber and Skype) offer multi-platform support while MySpace IM is brought to a significant disadvantage. In fact, they introduced this without even perfecting their web-based version. (how long are these two weeks supposed to be tom?)

Second, MySpaceIM is a clear indication of NewsCorp’s blatent entry into Instant Messaging. And it does make sense, you know. MySpace is a wildly popular social network so it would have a large userbase that would have the time to instant messenger and usually make it one of their staple functions on the Internet.

Third, it WOULD be wise to keep the friends list AND the im buddy list running in parallel. I am not saying they do it, I am saying that it would be wise if they did it. You have to re-add all your friends to your MySpace IM.

Humm, well if MySpace would get their act together and develop a Mac OS X client as well as improve on a few other features then this could be a pretty good contender in the Instant Messenger world. Until then, it will play second place only to existing IM clients such as ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber and sadly even AIM.

I’m not too skilled at setting up instant messaging clients, so this may be impossible or incorrect, but I read that myspaceIM was based on a Jabber client (which honestly, I am not sure exactly what that is except some kind of protocol) but that is what I have gmail set up using my iChat instant messenger on a mac. If it’s true that it is Jabber based, would it not be unreasonable to assume that at some point we could use the built in iChat for use with Myspace IM as well?

  2. Kyle Says:

Well, truth is that MySpace IM is not based on Jabber. It is due to the sheer fact that you have to use your e-mail address to login and more often than not, your e-mail address is not also a Jabber ID (JID). thecoldwood.com is not a Jabber-enabled domain (nor is kyleofalberta.ca for that matter) because I am on shared hosting and haven’t gotten an opportunity to set up my own server. The most popular service where your e-mail address can also function as a JID is Google Mail.

So, the short answer is no. You cannot use iChat with MySpace IM.
