A video podcast or a vlog?
As if a regular blog wasn’t enough - I’ve decided to start another blog - a video blog or rather, a video podcast. And I will make an effort to do what I can to post to it daily. However, I may decide to reserve posting to it every two days instead. I will cover a variety of issues that sometimes are unrelated other than in the essence that I’ve involved them into my life numerous times. And no, I will not do paid postings like the ones you find all over the blogosphere on the video blog. Everything I do on this new video blog will be truly honest and from the heart.
There are two reasons for this. The first of which is very important to me and is at the heart of why I blog. Some subjects I talk about deserve more than just the words that I type. A human face behind them is severely needed. Plus, not only that but you will see the face of the one who writes what you are reading now. My speech can get emotional and sometimes erratic. And some subjects require this touch as well as the calm, cool, collected touch that a textual format provides. Plus, I would like to think I look pretty damn cool and smexy in a hat. And not just any hat - the hat I am currently wearing.
The second reason is to generate revenue. It’s no secret that I need money. It’s no secret that I want an ethical way to make money. Therefore, a video podcast would make a lot of money if it were made available on Revver. Therefore, Revver will have a solely exclusive licence from me to display my content and serve my podcast. Plus, it allows for Quicktime and Flash versions of videos. This is great because I would prefer the Quicktime versions for the XML podcasts and Flash for the video podcast on the site. This way - it is visible at any time to anyone who has a feed reader (yes, I plan to release Podcast XML and RSS feeds of updates).
However, the only downside to Revver is the wait. Revver is no YouTube and you cannot upload content that you do not own. As a computer science, I am not too happy about piracy and I am not too happy about theft in general. However, I have the opportunity to look at piracy from the other side of the veil as well. I’ve been repeatedly ridiculed and insulted by Anti-Piracy agents who have even less morals than the pirates they serve. So I have very little sympathy for companies that fight pirates because they themselves have very little morals. And plus, if you sell a product at $400, this is not right and it is unfair to those who might need the product. However, to pirate programmes that cost a mere $30, like Shaun Inman’s Mint is just wrong - because the developer has priced his programme fairly.
Because of this wait time, you should know that posts to the video blog were made the day before the video is posted to the site and to the XML feed. I am working on a textual representation of the video (transcript) and I will try to hook it into the related posts and video entries so you can find related posts and videos. This gives you a look into opinions from a broader time frame. And, like this blog, it will also be using a style developed by the Blackthorne standard.
There is a legitimate reason why I don’t do this already on this blog. Because this is a textual blog. I provide textual content to an audience that has come to trust what I’ve said. An audience that knows that I would never stoop too low as to turn this blog into something out of MySpace - littered with YouTube videos and crappy widgets. My blog - as it is - can be accessed without the need of CSS, of Images and of Flash. I develop on standards and I believe in doing the right thing so as many people as possible can view my content. My video podcast will be available to view on a new website I am building and it will be built on standards as well. It will allow for commentary and down the line, I will style it so that it pushes how WordPress works with podcasts.

Oh no, Calgary isn’t cool. That’s why I am moving to Montreal.
