The Darkest Evil

Why donate? I believe that (at least on a small scale) great solutions come from a developer solving a problem that they want solved. I didn’t initially sell any of the software/plugins/code that I make available on this site because since I was already writing things that I wanted/needed, and I was willing to put in a little extra effort to try to make them usable by others.

Now that I don’t have work authorization here in Canada (no more day job), I do need to sell some of my software (got to put food on the table), but I’ve left a lot of my projects available for free. I see this as making a contribution to a community that I get a lot of benefits from. In fact, you probably already use a project that I actively work on. Services like dorklycute.com and whensthenextparty.com are expensive to run and, while they provide a level of joy, I find it terribly hard to pay the bills on these services. Especially when you factor in rent, groceries and what not.

I believe that if you use something and like it, you should encourage those who created it. I am always happy to send in donations when I find something I like and use; if for no other reason than it means I don’t have to build it myself.
