Am I an expatriate by birth or at home by my soul?
Here in Canada, everything seems and feels like I belong here. That raises the important question of whether or not I am really an expatriate here? Or, was it before I came here, I was an expatriated Canadian - just no papers to support my claim?
Some people have to go years of struggle and strife to find their true home. Mehran Karimi Nasseri has been waiting since 1988 to go home. He would not settle for less when the Belgian Government tried to give him residence in exchange for his inability to go home. Unfortunately, Mr. Nasseri may not reach his home in this lifetime, as he has recently been hospitalized for an unknown ailment. In fact, since August of this year, you could not visit Mr. Nasseri.
But I am kind of in the same situation. I am here in Canada, in limbo. I am not exactly allowed to stay here permanently (yet) and 2 choices of where to go (the United States or Poland). But I will not settle for less than home and I honestly believe that home is here. In fact, I am close to gaining my work permit and procuring my permanent resident visa.
