Shameless Plea: Funding for my voyage to the UK
I have done the necessary research and I have found that it is actually going to cost me $3,250 to make the trip up to the UK from Calgary. Of course, that means I am going to have to vastly increase my work load and HOPEFULLY get an apartment that is near my loving girlfriend, Becca. To do this, I want anyone who needs web design to consider contacting me. I am actually pretty good and I am willing to give you a discount for all quotes over US$500. I am also selling ads on the sidebar for US$60 a month. I will only be selling 10 of these so at US$40, this is well worth it. Plus, that gets you links in both the bottom of e-mails sent by my WordPress install as well. That will give you way more coverage.
Some people may be asking why I don’t do this via taking out a loan. Unfortunately, that’s not possible as my credit rating sucks. Both in Canada and in the United States. But this just means the reward will be that much sweeter. Actually, I don’t see how this could get sweeter. I am going to a country which is thousands of miles away from my family, I am going to be dating the woman of my dreams and to top it all of, she loves me for who I am. What more could you possibly ask for?

Wow, $3250 USD doesn’t sound like much money to get to and live in the UK! To live in London or anywhere in southern England, you’ll need about £30K/year (no joke). That basically assumes shared accommodation. It would be nearly impossible to compete as an unestablished and independent web developer/blogger in southern England because of the ridiculously high cost of living. IMHO, moving there without a good ‘company’ job is a guaranteed way to bankrupt yourself.
- Do you have a web design and/or advertising portfolio online?
- How many unique hits does your site get (i.e. plot your 6 month history of stats)?
- How many RSS subscribers do you have?
- Do you have any demographic information about your site users?
- What do your technorati stats show?
- How do you feel about adult-content ads?
Begging for money probably won’t get you too far… try writing a persuasive business case. Why would I want advertise on your site?

I feel your pain. I lived in London for a while last year and it cost me an arm and a leg. But if you are going there for love, you’ll find a way.
