Hitchhiking to the US - Day 1 Report

(You can find a video report of Day 1 at Revver and at Spymac) So, I had to evacuate Canada because my asshole landlord Shush threatened to have me deported. So I rushed to try to gather what personal effects I absolutely needed. This included toothbrushes, toothpaste, my laptop, a couple of books that I’d really like to have and a few articles of clothing. Even then, I had a hard time managing getting out off the house without breaking a piece off of my luggage. Fortunately, I could get someone to get me to Highway 2 from Falton Drive.

Once I got to the Tim Hortons near Highway 2, I started making my way to walk to the highway and fortunately, a man named Les saw my plight and decided to help get me a little further south down highway 2. I am grateful for this, because it got me further down the road and toward the states. He also gave me $25 Canadian Dollars so I am pretty happy about that. Then, I found another guy that would give me 5 more miles down the road to the Okotoks. This was quite kind except for the fact that I waited at the Okotoks for quite a long time.

It took a bit of a long time to get another ride. I believe it took me two hours so I was really desperate to try to find someone. I wrote a message on a piece of paper, tried waving, used the thumb thingy and finally resorted to standing in the street. I know it’s dangerous but I don’t care at this point. My main concern is to get out of Canada and fast. I learned something very important, whenever I drive - I should see what I can do to pick up hitchhikers. Most of the people I saw passing by had AMPLE room in their car. Most of what passed by were pickup trucks, sports utility vehicles and other big vehicles that could easily fit me and my limited amount of stuff.

Essentially, I was at the Okotoks turnoff of Highway 2 for a couple of hours. I was waiting for someone to come pick me up because I wanted to leave Canada before night fall. But the good news is that a really nice elderly couple picked me up and took me all the way to Lethbridge. This is nice because that was almost 200 kilometres away. That and Lethbridge is only a hour away from the United States/Canadian border (according to Ben and Lil). That’s pretty good, considering the fact that I need to make my way to Wisconsin immediately. Fortunately, there are a couple of stores in Lethbridge that sell electronics so I can probably find one to shoot off an e-mail to my lovely Becca.

Unfortunately, they had to let me go on my own way once we got to Lethbridge, but I don’t really mind. I got to meet some really nice people, store my stuff and I even got accommodations for the night. How great was that? While I found myself crashing at a homeless shelter, I made sure to avoid eating the food. Basically, taking up space is one thing, but I cannot accept food from a homeless shelter. The reason being is that the space will more than likely be there tomorrow for someone that needs it. I haven’t consumed it completely so that is not too big of an issue for me. However, eating food at a homeless shelter IS wrong because you are taking a resource that was donated by the community for the destitute. What right do I have then to take it?

Most of the time, my mind has been on my wonderful girlfriend Becca. Fortunately, I was able to stop into a coffee shop here in Lethbridge (named the Penny Coffee House - if you are looking for really friendly people, this is a great place to find them) and shoot an e-mail to her. Unfortunately, she was not online. That AND PayPal illicitly refunded a client of mine that did not deserve a refund. I’ve uploaded a video I made about my trip at Revver and at Spymac. Now, we are going to start Day 2 in a few hours. Until then, stay smexy. ^_^

Well… You ARE homeless, thus eating at a Homeless Shelter isn’t exactly wrong.

    Hi Kyle,
I sent you and email Saturday afternoon but now realise you had already started on your journey.. I don’t know if you’ve read the email, but the offer still stands as long as I have the house and you agree to the conditions..
Be that as it may, I sincerely hope you have a safe journey to Wisconsin.. I will keep checking back here for updates but would appreciate an email response if you can manage it.

Thanks. I am thinking about just heading back to Tomball, though.
