I’ve set the pricing for the year
I’ve set the pricing at which I will do work for people - and this includes custom work and all that stuff. At the root of it - I will charge US$25.00 a hour. Basically, this price is non-negotiable and is set for until January 1, 2008. The reason for this is because this year - I will have entered my ninth year as a web designer. And this year, I will have entered my fifth year as a web developer. And I will have spent my first year breaking my designs out of tables and putting them into CSS. I’ve spent many years tinkering with subjects like usability, standards, PHP, ASP, MySQL and other fun subjects. The pricing is fair for the level of experience I have.
This does not mean that I do not have a set pricing scheme for my work. A large amount of my default quotes will be based on the amount of time I spend (on average) working on projects like the ones I quote. The price includes labour only. I will charge extra if more tools are needed and only then. But this is highly unlikely - considering that I have a Windows and Linux installation on this computer to test with (via Parallels Desktop for Mac), the latest version of Adobe Creative Suite 3, TextMate and other such tools on this computer. I will not charge for services like updates via e-mail but for an extra US$45, I will provide updates via telephone and Skype. And this includes any telephone number around the world or any Skype identity. I do not do updates via IM because I try to keep my IM identities private.
By this scheme - a WordPress theme which takes me 1 hour will be quoted at around US$25.00. I will also charge for partial time, rounding up to the nearest dollar. Like a project that takes 1 and a half hours would cost US$38 (first hour - US$25.00, remaining half-hour - US$13.00). A simple vBulletin theme which includes a moderate level of customization (1 days) is quoted at US$200.00. And a more advanced level of customization (3 days) is quoted at US$600.00. Also, modifications which take more time will cost a lot more money. And fully fledged sites that take a week will cost you US$1400.00. The reason why I do this is to afford a living where I don’t have to scrape funds together at the very last minute. Hell, just one week of work can do a lot for me in Montreal, Quebec and in Calgary, Alberta.
In theory, if my work is scheduled out at maximum capacity for an entire year (12 months), I would make US$67,200.00 and wouldn’t that be sweet? But, by virtue, I will only take one client at a time so they get exactly what they paid for and I can provide better services. Of course, I will be doing my work via a time sheet. And you can get a copy of the time sheets and what I did on your projects via the mail if you add US$4 - which will pay for equipment only - paper, ink cartridges, envelopes, postage and expenses to printing your 3 or 4 page report. Of course, a .pdf file will be made available to you via e-mail.
